Pastor Jimmy Haywood Bention, Sr. was born on November 25, 1958 in Antioch (Hoke County) North Carolina. His family moved to New York when he was 5 years old and he attended the New York City Public School System until 1974. After moving back to his beloved North Carolina (in that same year), he attended Red Springs High School, Red Springs (Robeson County), North Carolina, graduating in the Class of 1977.
After working for nearly two years, he entered the United States Marine Corps on February 1, 1979. Pastor Bention, Sr. served for 13 years and 8 months, and was honorably discharged on September 30, 1992.
While in the Marine Corps he served as an Administrative Chief, Personnel Chief, and worked with the New York State – Boys State program for 4 years. He help start the careers of many young men and women from 1988 – 1991 as a Marine Recruiter. He was a community participant at all of his duty stations.
Pastor Jimmy H. Bention, Sr. was a Member of the Union County Board of Adjustment where he served as Chairman. He was Chairman of the Union County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC). He has been a member of the Marine Corps League; Former Treasurer for Union County Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (UCIMA). Pastor Bention, Sr. has stepped down after seven years of being President of the Monroe High School PTSO. He is also a former member of the Monroe High School Site-Base Management Team (4 years); and Monroe Middle School Site-Base Management Team (2 year). Pastor Bention, Sr. is the Former Head Cross Country Coach and former Assistant Boys/Girls Track Coach for Monroe High School. He is part of the Monroe High School 2012 1A Girls State Championship Track Team. Coaching keeps him young and in shape. Pastor Bention, Sr. trained for years and holds the Rank of Black Belt in Kempo Style Karate.
He is very active politically and is a former Chairman of the Union County Republican Party. He made history in March of 2009 by becoming the first Black to be Voted Chairman BY EITHER Political Party in Union County, North Carolina. Jimmy is a former Candidate for the North Carolina House of Representative, District 69. He is a former Chairman of the North Carolina Minority Affairs Committee, as well as former Chaplin of Union County and North Carolina Republican Men’s Club.
Pastor Bention, Sr. is an Ordained Elder in the Church Of God In Christ (COGIC). He is Pastor of Metrolina Christian Center COGIC Monroe, NC and Temple Church Of God In Christ Rockingham, NC. He attended the International Seminary while stationed in Okinawa, Japan and received his diploma of Practical Theology.
Pastor Bention, Sr. is the Executive Director of the Mission To Men Department of the Greater North Carolina Jurisdiction led by Bishop Leroy Jackson Woolard. He is an Executive Committee Member and Vice President of the Jurisdictional Presidents Council for the Men Perfecting Men Conference of the International Church Of God In Christ, Inc. He serves as the 2nd Administrative Assistant of the E.C. Cannon Memorial District Churches of God in Christ, Charlotte, North Carolina led by Superintendent Tommie A. Murphy.
In 2014 Pastor Bention, Sr. was Appointed District 1 School Board Member for Union County, North Carolina Board of Education where he served from June to November. Pastor Bention, Sr. is currently serving again on the UCPS Board of Education. He is a Chaplin for the Monroe Police Department. He and his wife Glendora (Married since July 1980), have four children, five grandchildren, two Daughter-In-Laws, one Son-In-Law, and one God-Son.
